.fla

.fla files contain source material for the Flash application. Flash authoring software can edit FLA files and compile them into .swf files.

.swf

.swf files are completed, compiled and published files that cannot be edited with Adobe Flash. However, many ”.swf decompilers” exist. Attempting to import .swf files using Flash allows the user to retrieve some assets from the .swf, but not all.

Google’s pay per click model. Adwords are displayed on top of Google search results and to the right side.

Animation

An image that changes over time. A simple example is Abacus logo, where the red dot is moving up and down every several seconds.

API

An interface that a software program implements in order to allow other software to interact with it, much in the same way that software might implement a user interface in order to allow humans to use it.

Bandwidth

The maximum amount of data that can travel a communication path in a given time, usually measured in seconds. If you think of the communications path as a pipe, then bandwidth represents the width of the pipe that determines how much data can flow through it at once.

Banner

Typically, a rectangular advertisement placed on a website either above, below or on the sides of the website’s main content and is linked to the advertiser’s own website.

Black Hat

A black hat is the villain or bad guy, especially in a western movie in which such a character would wear a black hat in contrast to the hero’s white hat. The phrase is often used figuratively, especially in computing slang, where it refers to a hacker who breaks into networks or computers, or creates computer viruses. — From Wikipedia.

Blog

A type of website, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order.

Browser

Also called a Web browser, a software application used to locate and display Web pages. The two most popular browsers are Microsoft Internet Explorer and FireFox. There are many other browsers, including Safari and Opera.

Cache

Identified as a space where web pages you have visited are stored in your computer. When you re-visit a document, the browser checks to see if it is cached and it will retrieve information from there because it is faster than retrieving information from the server.

Cloaking

Method of delivery that changes which page is displayed depending on the user asking for the page. This practice is unethical and is considered spamming by most search engines.

Conversion Rates

The ratio of visitors who convert casual content views or website visits into desired actions based on subtle or direct requests from marketers, advertisers, and content creators.

Database

A special way of organizing computer data. It looks like a table — columns and rows for fast accessing data from any of the cells in the table. There are many different types of databases but all of them work on the same principle. Databases are very useful for storing and organizing data for later retrieval. They are often used for managing accounts, user information, guest books and bulletin boards.

DNS (Domain Name System)

Identifies each computer as a network point on the Internet using an Internet protocol (IP) address system to translate from domain name to IP and reverse.

Domain Name

A unique name that identifies one or more IP addresses. For example, the domain name bluekaboom.com represents one IP address. Domain names are used in URLs to identify particular Web pages. Every website you visit is stored under a domain name.

Domain Name Extension

The part after the dot in the domain name is a domain name extension. In the bluekaboom.com domain, the domain extension is .com. There are many other domain name extensions, including .org, .gov, .edu, .mil, .info, .web, and .us.

E-Commerce

Conducting business on the Internet. It mostly refers to buying and selling items online.

Email Aliases

A forwarding e-mail address. E-Mail aliases are often used to create handy replacements for long or difficult-to-remember e-mail addresses. They can also be used to create generic e-mail addresses such as webmaster@example.com and info@example.com.

Email Marketing

A form of direct marketing which uses electronic mail as a means of communicating commercial or fund raising messages to an audience.  They can be used to enhance relationships with existing customers or to add new customers.

Email Service Provider

A company providing email services, an email service provider (ESP) offers email marketing or bulk email services.

Encryption

A way of coding the information in a file or e-mail message so that if it is intercepted by a third party as it travels over a network, it cannot be read. Only the persons sending and receiving the information have the key, which makes it unreadable to anyone except those persons (your browser does it automatically).

Flash

Browser-independent vector and graphic animation technology owned by Adobe. Most browsers support Flash technology, and one Flash animation looks the same on all browsers.

Header Tags

Tags that label your headline so that search engines will recognize it as “important” on your web page, as well as make it stand out to your viewer. 

Hidden Text

Test on a website that is hidden to the human eye, but is visible to search engines, for example using the same background color for the text font. This process is unethical and is considered spam to search engines and website with hidden text will be banned from search engines.

Hyperlink

Element in an electronic document that links to another place in the same document or an entirely different document.

Internet Marketing

Term used to describe incorporating all aspects of promoting web sites online including SEO, pay per click, viral marketing, social marketing, etc.

IP Address

(Internet Protocol number or address). A unique number consisting of 4 parts separated by dots, e.g. 258.60.21.182 Every machine that is on the Internet has a unique IP address. If a machine does not have an IP number, it is not really on the Internet. Most machines also have one or more Domain Names that are easier for people to remember.

Javascript

An object-oriented scripting language used to enable programmatic access to objects within both the client application and other applications. It is primarily used in the form of client-side JavaScript, implemented as an integrated component of the web browser, allowing the development of enhanced user interfaces and dynamic websites.

Keyword Stuffing

Repeating a keyword or search phrase over and over again on a page in an unnatural fashion just to raise your site’s ranking for that term does not produce quality content. The practice of keyword stuffing is one of the Black Hat tactics that led to external linking becoming such an important factor in search engine results rankings.  These external links are far more difficult to control than such things as keyword stuffing, cloaking, etc. This is a great way to get your site “black listed” on search engines too.

Keywords

A word searched for in a search command. Words are searched in any order.

Landing Page

The page that appears when a potential customer clicks on an advertisement or a search-engine result link. The page will usually display content that is a logical extension of the advertisement or link, and that is optimized to feature specific keywords or phrases for indexing by search engines.

Merchant Account

A type of bank account that allows businesses to accept payments by debit or credit cards. A merchant account also serves as an agreement between a retailer, a merchant bank and payment processor for the settlement of credit card and/or debit card transactions.

Meta tags

Seen in the code of your site by a search engine. The most common and relevant are keyword and description tags. The keyword tags are used for keyword searches in search engines, & description tags provide a brief description of the webpage.

Niche Market

The subset of the market on which a specific product is focusing on; Therefore the market niche defines the specific product features aimed at satisfying specific market needs, as well as the price range, production quality and the demographics that is intended to impact.

Organic Search Engine Listings

Term referred to in the SEO field as non paid or non pay per click listings in the search engines.

Page Rank

An exponential based value that signifies importance of a webpage used by google. Using the toolbar, anyone can view a sites ranking.

Pay-Per-Click Optimization

an internet advertising model used on websites, in which advertisers pay their host only when their ad is clicked. With search engines, advertisers typically bid on keyword phrases relevant to their target market. Content sites commonly charge a fixed price per click rather than use a bidding system.

QuickTime

QuickTime is a multimedia framework developed by Apple Inc., capable of handling various formats of digital video, media clips, sound, text, animation, music, and several types of interactive panoramic images.

ROI (Return on Investment)

The ratio of money gained or lost (whether realized or unrealized) on an investment relative to the amount of money invested.

Search Engine

A tool designed to search for information on the World Wide Web. The search results are usually presented in a list and are commonly called hits. The information may consist of web pages, images, information and other types of files. (ie: Google, Yahoo, etc.)

Search Engine Optimization

Process of modifying and marketing a website for higher rankings in search engines.

SERP

Short for search engine results page, the Web page that a search engine returns with the results of its search.

Social Marketing

Term used to describe the ‘new’ method of search online: example: myspace.com, youtube.com, delicio.us etc. People talking to people via the web.

Spider

Spiders are automatically sent out by search engines to follow hyperlinks from one document to the next over the web. When a spider finds a new site, it sends information back to the main site to be indexed. Spiders also search previously spidered sites because information is ever changing and it will update cataloged sites.

Universal Search

Google’s new and improved method of incorporating blog results, news results, e-books, web pages and video’s into it’s search algorithm.

Vertical Search

Targeted niche type search engine or directory focused on a particular topic or business. Typically applicable in B2B applications.

Widget

A web widget is a mini-web application that you can put in your web page, blog or social profile that can quickly and easily provide your visitors with, user specific information , extra functionality, and even a bit of fun and games.

Windows Media

Microsoft’s audio and video framework for Windows, which embraces playback, encoding and streaming.
